Does push-mail actually work this time? In SLS it is supported, but not with an iPhone. iPhone push thus far only works with Exchange, Google or MobileMe.

    Thanks!

    -Hans-Martijn

Push works AWESOME on Kerio Connect 7 to the iPhone, 6 worked great also. It uses an outlook connector for it's black magic. Email are generally pushed to and appear on my iPhone within a second of hitting the server.

Wouldn't it be lovely if the new iPhones ship with 32 gb (as the base phone) and 64 gb (as the higher capacity phone)?

    One could hope...
:DI fully expect this. With a bump for the $99 iPhone to 16 GB. There's no reason not to do this. In fact, I think it was more or less confirmed that the only reason the iPhone 4 wasn't 64 GB had to do with some kind of patent issue or supply constraints due to anticompetitive practices (I forget exactly), which made the chips too scarce for production.

As for the Expose prototype, I agree with others. I think they dumped this multitasking interface because using the App icon made more sense given screen space limitations.

So, how do you define "racism in practice"?

Is taking the seat next to a white over an asian racist?

How about going to a black cashier instead of a white one?

Hah. I like this question because it's hard. I fear my idealism can't stand up to it...

In principle I believe that nobody should act differently towards another because of their race. That would be racist discrimination, in theory. It would be racist to choose to sit next to an asian person instead of a white person (irrespective of your motives: either as a white-hater or as a rice-chaser).

But this would be impossible to criminalise. It would be highly impractical and frankly, whilst I disapprove of such actions, I cannot imagine a legal framework effectively punishing them. It would be utterly totalitarian.

But at the other extreme, I'm sure we all agree it is entirely unacceptable to deny somebody a job, say, because of their ethnicity. This would be ultimately harming them for it; and when we harm others by practising our opinions against them, we breach a fundamental tenet of Western society.

The difficulty, as always, comes in deciding on the threshold of what we tolerate, as a society. To answer that question I suppose we need to ask a few others. What constitutes harm to another? How practically can we judge when harm has been done? How easily can we punish offenders?

I don't suppose that's really an answer. Sorry.

I don't like the idea of living in a world where good outcomes are enforced.

My wife's car was hit in her work's parking garage not too long ago... and the woman who hit her put a note on the car. I felt really good about this, considering how many times I've been hit-and-run in the past. Until I noticed the big security camera pointed right at the space.

I didn't feel good anymore. I don't know if the woman left the note because she's a good person who did the right thing, or if she did it because she thought she might have been caught on camera.

I want to see racist people being racist and good people not being racist. I want to know where the line is. I don't want an overbearing nanny government forcing everyone to play nice.

I entirely agree that genuine kindness and tolerance is far superior to its artificial counterpart. When something is fake, it's about as rewarding as making the bully apologise by everyone ganging up on him and twisting his arm. It may seem nice but its insincerity undermines its value. I guess you'd like Kant, whose categorical imperative roughly says that the moral worth of an action lies in its intent.

But whilst utopia would be kind people acting with tolerance out of the goodness of their hearts, we don't really see this. In fact, people often harm others. This isn't great. Neither is it great to force people into acting in the interests of other people. But frankly I believe it is better to protect the vulnerable from harm than to allow the abusers their freedom. Even if that means a 'nanny state'. I'm not saying we should decapitate one who insults another. I merely believe in the principle of enforcing people not to harm others by their actions. Neither with intent nor carelessness.

That's my idealism. Don't ask me to qualify 'harm' or propose appropriate laws against it because that would be tough...

I'm sure this is the first of many companies to ignore the massive PowerPC userbase out there. I wish there was something like a reverse-rosetta.

So much for the age-old tradition of Macs having a much longer useful service life than a Windows PC, now a 2-month old PowerMac is already becoming obsolete.

I stand corrected, however, they are still 7 percentiles apart. So yes, shouting distance. But what would the 55-percentile Pentium 4 speed be? 1.5-1.6GHz? Maybe less?

So basically you pay like this for your phone now:

    1. Minutes
    2. Data on broadband
    3. Power for microcell

ATT should pay you for this.

The calls still go through the AT&T network. How do you think a call gets from the Microcell to the person you're calling?

Everyone seems so shocked by the minor discount they don't stop to think a little broader...

....this probably means Apple is already pricing these exceptionally low and can't discount them any more than that.

Further I seem to recall the iPhone and iTouch weren't available for volume or educational purchasing for quite some time... I know they weren't available through bussiness accounts for a quite some time.

The other thing this suggests is that there won't be a $100 price drop in 3-6 months like there was on the iPhone... if they were to be able to drop the pricing that much in the near future they'd offer education a bigger discount now.

Finally for those that don't see why these would be a boon for universities... most students going into university already have laptop, they don't really want to buy new laptops through their university. Requiring all incoming students but a $500 iPad is a lot more palatable than requiring they all by $2000 laptops. Having the entire student body standardized on one platform is huge for teachers and authors.

What drugs are you taking? Have you been to university? How is a student supposed to do a dissertation on a glorified iPhone? I'm doing an MSc and I need stats software, a pdf viewer and word running concurrently. As for the $2k laptop? Try $999 for a MB (less with a student discount)

I don't have a huge problem with apple offering these to schools but the price is far too steep. If they do somehow manage to crowbar their iPads into schools they'll be indoctrinating the younger generation into apple computing whilst still shifting units for a hefty mark-up. Good work apple, but you should twist the knife a little more and make the schools pay for the shipping.

I've learned a great deal about Canada's election system the last three months. I for one am happy Harper won the majority. Also for any Americans hearing the word conservative and cringing with thoughts of Sarah palin floating in your head the parties are a bit different up here. There really isn't as much of the polar opposites like you see from dems/reps. In fact I would consider most parties center to center left.

verbose, do you ever give newbies a break with typos these days? :D

Great posts, guys. Well worth reading. But I think some of you need to take a closer look at WHY MHz/GHz doesn't matter as much.

First of all, the Px does not have the Velocity Engine, and OS 10.1/2 uses it. There is a dramatic performance over the G4 (and especially later G3s) with 10.2, as the operating system is now more effeciant. Also, OS X takes advantage of dual processors to a certain degree (maybe an extra 50 percent or so). Finally, when you take a look at the new PowerMacs, you are looking at 4MB of L3 Cache (w/ dual 1.25GHz). The Px don't seem to have that (if any). So, basically, that would bring a 64-bit system (in terms of the P4) to about 4 or 5GHz right there.

Now, take a look at the PC. Sure, the PC has incredible boot time, is great for playing games, and has a quick OS. However, the P4 lacks the necessity of an effecient L1 Cache. I do not see how 4Kb will provide enough memory for the complex operations tha Macs can handle. So, instead of a 4.7GHz, you're looking at, maybe, 3.x or 4GHz, assuming, with this new chip, the L1 cache has remained unchanged.

The only reasons Macs appear to be bogged down are because of the slower bus speeds (167MHz (Mac) compared to 333MHz or faster (PC) w/BOTH having DDR-RAM) and because not all applications support the Velocity Engine. It may not be THAT big of a difference, but it does bring the overall speed of the G4 down, when compared to a P4. Apple's apps sure work with OS X and the VE, but not a whole lot of other apps. In these cases (varies on how often, depending on what percentage of application usage involves the VE) the overall speed of the G4 (in relative terms to a P4) would decrease significantly, and that's one of the other reasons why were are getting hit badly.

I honestly don't see how a G5 (IF it comes out) would help, unless it was able to *fool* non-VE apps to thinking that data is going in 64-bit pathways, and the G5 could split that to 128-bit or even 256-bit pathways. Otherwise, the G4 will NOT be beneficial in the long run.

What does ANY of this have to do to Apple rejecting a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist from the App Store?

Nothing, directly. I was responding to a previous comment as you can see. There is an indirect connection to the cartoonist issue. My feeling is that there's a general failure to understand why Apple has a restrictive policy regarding what types of apps can appear in the app store. My post addressed the issue regarding the prohibition of pornography, instead of the issue of what defines an app with defamatory content as was the case with the cartoonist. There's also, in my opinion, a failure to appreciate that the lack of consistency in the app approval process is a result of Apple being unable to anticipate every scenario and nuance that is presented by certain apps, and the fact that Apple hires people to review apps. You can't realistically expect different people to always agree on situations that are slightly different. In order to respond to the explosion of submitted apps, Apple must have had to hire a lot of new reviewers. That means that you may have less control over the quality and experience level of the people that you have working as reviewers.

I always question the sanity of people who use laptops this way.

I never use the physical click as it requires an extra finger, and it sounds extremely loud. The only time I press it is for dragging, as Apple's lame implementation of Drag Lock gives you an annoying delay each time you do a single click, while it waits to see if you're going to drag or not. But of course you need two hands for that, as if you use a single hand your finger movement will be greatly restricted, making you have to repeat the movement many times. This is what I miss with a mouse: you could simply drag and drop with ease, using a single hand.

Also, everyone seems to say that the entire trackpad is the button, which clearly isn't the case: you can't press it at the top, for example, as that is where the hinge is. If I could physically click, i.e. press down on the trackpad anywhere (not just the bottom half), and perform a drag with a single finger pressing down on the button and moving the cursor at the same time, that would be great. I wonder why Apple didn't do that.

I find it funny how investors continue to trust these "analyst" even though none of them have any insider information and are wrong 90% of the time, the other 10% of the time they have been correct was from publishing rumors as facts from stories they more likely read here on MacRumors regarding future products.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2010/10/06/early-apple-tv-sales-estimated-at-1-million-per-quarter/

like this guy "Alex Gauna" who called 20 Apple Stores around the country and already determined that the new Apple TV is selling at a rate of 1 millions units a quarter, even thought Apple Stores never give out any information of how many units have been received or sold.

how do these people still have jobs?

...unless you have a dynamic IP

...Which your ISP has kept a record of that YOU had that dynamic IP at a specific date and time. Your ISP knows when and for how long they hand out each IP address. It's called record keeping. I know which user on my LAN at my business has which DHCP given IP. It's simple historical data.

Think RIAA and all the John/Jane Doe lawsuits

I hope Lion will mark the end of DVD drives in all Macs ... they can be an additional option so that whoever needs one can pay for it - I don't have any need for it and Lion should be available as download and USB stick. I haven't bought any software on DVD in ages - I will always opt for downloads - DVD is a technology from the last century.

Hmm, something is wrong with my memory or math ... last time I checked the MacBook Air was the cheapest laptop from Apple and has the USB included - all the more expensive laptops have old fashioned DVDs.

I agree. The most problematic components in a computer in general are the mechanical ones, and at this point, the only mechanical component that most likely will never be removed is the fan. Mobile devices on the other hand have even done away with that. These are interesting times. I rarely ever use the optical drive anymore, in fact, I have not used it in months... There is simply no reason to. Virtually all software is available online via the mac app store or some site somewhere, and the only things i use the drive for anymore are OS restores from time machine. If Apple were to provide a restore partition with the default install of Lion, then that would be it. No more DVD drive.
